Last month I spent a week in New York City with my favorite woman in the world, my mom! NYC is one of my most-loved cities, and my mom had never been so I was really excited to be her tour guide around the Big Apple. We had a great time, and I thought I’d put together some posts sharing some photos as well as my NYC recommendations!
The weather was beautiful on our first day in the city, so we made a beeline for Top of the Rock: the 70th floor observation deck at the top of the GE Building in Rockefeller Center. From there we could see all of Manhattan, surrounding neighborhoods, and even all the way out to Liberty and Ellis Island. Top of the Rock has three floors with both indoor and outdoor vantage points, but if you go, make sure to go all the way up to the top one (70th)! It is the only one that isn’t enclosed with glass barriers… great for photography!
After Top of the Rock we went out into Rockefeller Plaza to get a look at the ice skating rink and were surprised to see it had been transformed into a summer garden bar and restaurant! The entire area was filled with outdoor lounge furniture, so we went down and grabbed a spot right by the water fountain and ordered iced teas and a delicious veggie + pita snack plate. I’m not sure if this is something they do every summer in the rink area, but it’s definitely worth checking for if you go in the warmer months!
We spent the rest of the afternoon doing some shopping, then caught a cab over to Hillstone Restaurant at 53rd and 3rd for dinner. This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC and happens to be the sister chain to another favorite of mine, Houston’s. This place makes the best veggie burger patties, it’s ridiculous. My mom had the french dip and said it was the best she’s ever had. Everything was delicious… I highly recommend if you are in the neighborhood! (Pardon the grainy iPhone photos here!)
After dinner we walked a few blocks up to Serendipity for dessert. I’ve been dying to take my mom here for years, as it is the ultimate destination to get a crazy delicious sugar coma. One of their specialties is Frozen Hot Chocolate and it’s insanely good – I like to get the peanut butter version. It is also the restaurant from the movie Serendipity, with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. I ordered the cheesecake with fudge and strawberries. YUM.
