Closet Organization: Mini-Makeover

My biggest resolution for 2014 is to organize and simplify my home. Every so often I do a clean out, but things never fail to clutter and pile up again. This month, my project has been my closet/clothing organization. My first step was to go through and pull out items I don’t wear enough, and donate them.  Then, I turned my focus toward improving storage and organization.

This week I tackled something I’ve been needing to for a while: hangers.  My closet has always been full of the basic, plastic hangers in a variety of colors, mostly because I can buy them in packs of 20 for only a few dollars.  While the price is right, I find plastic hangers are bulky and aesthetically unpleasing.  I hate the way my favorite wardrobe pieces look hanging on them.

My solution: upgrading to some velvet slimline hangers.  I decided to go with the Real Simple Slimline Suit Hangers from Bed Bath & Beyond.  They sell them in packs of 12 and 50, which is great so if you need a bunch, you can just buy a big box!

These hangers come in three colors: Black, Stone, and Pink, and they come with an “accessory” bar on them, so you can hang a blouse, pants, and scarf/belt/etc. all on one hanger.  I went with Stone, a light ivory color.

What I love most about these hangers that the velvet material is really grippy.  I can hang the silkiest blouse or tank top on these and it won’t budge!  And because they are so slim, these hangers take up almost half the space in my closet that the plastic hangers used to.  They aren’t super heavy duty, so I will still be hanging heavy jackets and similar items on sturdier hangers, but these are perfect for your everyday tops and sweaters!

Ta-da!  I feel like my closet has been completely refreshed.  I love how classy, sophisticated, and uniform the new hangers look.  Before and after:

Have you done anything to makeover your closet recently?

  • Brittany Crenshaw

I recently did a reorganizing project in my closet which was nice from an organization in the morning stand point but what I quickly realized is I don’t have a lot of items and I’ve been wearing the same things on repeat for waaaay too long. So with the newly fresh and organized closet came an intense desire to do some shopping! Haha, so next on the list is velvet lined hangers…and new tops and pants!!!!

    • Allison Anderson

Haha don’t you love when you find that you really NEED to go shopping?! Have fun! 😀

  • Christal C

This has been on my list of things to do for a while. My closet is full of only the black plastic hangers and while it looks uniformed, it does take up more space. I need to make the splurge soon too.

  • Corie

This is on my to do list once we move! I hate the look of plastic hangers! Do you use a wardrobe bar or closet?

    • Allison Anderson

Depending on the season and my current organization, I sometimes use a clothing rack for extra space, but the majority of my wardrobe is in a closet!

  • tearliner

Velvet hangers are really amazing! But the only thing I don’t like is that certain fabrics can leave a bit of fabric fuzz on the hangers.

  • HaileyGrace1050 .

I have been wanting to purchase velvet hangers for quite some time, I just might finally do it after seeing this post! :)

  • MissEmmySue

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my hangers for months- thank you for the inspiration to finally do it! It looks gorgeous. (:

    • Allison Anderson

      Thank you! :)

  • Jade Morriss

It’s amazing how such a simple thing as hangers can make the world of difference to the appearance of your wardrobe – it’s the uniformity of the hangers, I’m sure. I’d love to see more of your home organisation projects.

Wish I had enough space in my closet to use hangers, but unfortunately I don’t so everything is just stacked, which makes it difficult for me to see all my clothes and means I usually wear the same pieces over and over. Hopefully this is something I can remedy in college!

sigh, I definitely want hangers like this now! it seems so simple but wow what a difference!

    • Allison Anderson

Thanks! I couldn’t believe how much it transformed my closet, and the way I look at it!

  • Natalie

I love the new look to your closet, changing the hangers definitely made all the difference!

    • Allison Anderson

      Thank you!

  • Carina Stewart

Mine is the same, filled with miss matched hangers! Yours looks so lovely now Alison.. the thought of cleaning out my closet really daunts me!

      Thank you! :)

I did something similar to my wardrobe closet a few years back. I got rid of all my plastic hangers and bought matching white wooden ones from Ikea. The change in style was remarkable and far more pleasing.

  • Sterndli98

I went through my closet in december and donated a lot of stuff. I will sometimes this year upgrade to the same hangers you have, but since they are so expensive here in Switzerland I wait for a deal to buy them.

  • Kate

Such a dream wardrobe! I love the fact everything is colour co-ordinated, we’re so similar Allison!

I definitely need to upgrade my hangers..I still have some from when I was like 5! Organizing clothing is way better with matching hangers as well as getting better quality ones so they don’t leave annoying dents on the shoulders when you hang shirts or sweaters. I’ll need to check out Bed Bath & Beyond for some. !
    p.s. Go hawks!! >.<

  • Faith Luna Stencel

I switched to the same type of hangers. You’re right–they take up so much less space, and they grip the clothes so I don’t have the problem with things sliding off the hangers and onto the floor while I’m trying to find something.

  • Márcia Vieira

I wish I had a closet like yours!

  • Jamie

I love this! It looks sooo gorgeous!

    • Allison Anderson

      Thanks!! :)

  • Ashley Murphy

Totally inspired to redo my closet now. Even having hangers all the same color would make an immense difference. FYI- they make a heavyweight version of those exact hangers you used. Thought you might want to know in case you wanted to keep everything uniform:)

  • Anna Shadrina

I love how organized your closet looks!:)
Maybe I’m totally wrong, but did you get the idea of decluttering it from the book The Happiness Project?)
P.S. Love your blog and your videos, Allison!:)

  • Laura

I have always had matching hangers but went from white plastic ones to wooden ones. I regret not getting velvet ones as the wooden hangers take up a lot of space!

Really lovely, simple idea and it makes a HUGE difference.

  • MissBrunzy

I have always wanted to do this but I just cant justify spending money on hangers when I already have so many. I really really want to do this though!

  • Aissa

I think it’s time for me to start buying velvet hangers. I really need to reorganize my closet :)

  • Kate Flint

Really love this look! My closet is behind closed doors so I really neglect that space. I feel like I need a refreshment to it now :) The only I do do (do-do?) is I put them in colour groups like you have :) Really makes it look a bit more put together and organised.

  • Laura Michelle

I just did the same thing (found a good deal on those types of hangers) and I can’t be happier with how it turned out. It’s amazing what a difference just changing hangers can do …. it completely transformed my closet. I find I can hang a lot more now with the slimmer hangers. It’s great.

  • Erin @ The Grass Skirt Blog

I’ve been meaning to do the same thing. I am so tired of having my clothes fall off the hangers!

That’s a happy closet for sure!! I love how tidy it looks! I really want to do the same thing but I seem to be way too lazy. But your post is really inspiring <3

  • Alexandra Brovco

I don’t mind plastic hangers myself, but I have to say the new ones do add sophistication. Your closet looks awesome.

One thing I did recently was arrange my wardrobe by colour. Which wasn’t hard because all I seem to wear is black, grey, and green.

  • BeautyBanterBlog

Organizing is such a pain but feels SO good when your done!! Great post!

That reminds me I need to get new closet hangers! I currently have very ugly wire hangers… they must go! Lovely post Allison :) x

  • VaNessa

    Super cute!!

  • Amanda Wheeless

I switched out my hangers slowly over a year ago and it was so worth the investment. I found mine at costco, marshals and tjmaxx. My closet is my baby and I love having everything in it’s place!

  • RxBeautyChic

I switched my multicolored plastic hangers to black non-slip hangers a few months ago. And I have been loving it! I also have a little rolling closet rack in my bedroom too. The black hangers adds a little boutique feel!

  • Axelle Blanpain

I am currently in the process of redoing my closet. I am lucky enough to have a whole room to myself, but I really want to include a desk in there as well to have a proper space to work on my blog & Youtube channel…
