The Purge: Blush Edition

blushpurge1w

For the grand finale of my makeup purge, I tackled the most beloved section of my stash: my blush drawers.  Ah, I love blush.  Something about a great color to pop on the cheeks just makes me happy.  Not so happy: the fact that I had 94 of them piled up in my collection.  Ninety.  Four.  Ridiculous.  The before:

I first pulled out all of the “No way am I getting rid of this!” colors and set them aside in a bin.  This included my Hourglass blushes and favorites from Benefit, NARS, Dior, Tarte and MAC.  Realistically, I should have parted with the rest because this initial “must keep” pile was over twenty products, but blush is my weakness and I wasn’t ready for that big of a purge!

Next I dumped the rest of my blushes out on the floor and began sorting by type (cream vs. powder) and color category.  I swatched each one on my arm, noting the formula and asking myself, “Do I actually like this color?  Will I actually wear this color?”  Almost all of my cream blushes had dried or were past their expiration dates… I was so bummed to part with my MAC in Lillyland “Joie de Vivre”, one of my favorites! I tried my best to eliminate dupes and stick to the formulas and shades I know I will get use out of.

The final toss pile!  The majority of the nixed blushes were either lacking in formula or just plain old.  It was hard for me to part with several of my MAC shades, mostly because I have such a “collector” tendency toward MAC products, but these ones really weren’t fantastic in terms of color payoff and formula.  They had to go!  I also parted with several shades that were just a little too bright or wrong for my complexion.

After!  I’m happy to be down to just one blush drawer now, and while I still have more colors than I need, I ended up getting rid of 39 blushes, which is 41% of my collection!  Purge progress!!  Like the rest of my products, everything I decided to keep is on probation, so I will revisit things in six months and if anything is collecting dust, it goes!

Holy blush, that’s a lot of makeup! They all look so beautifully organized though, which is a primary reason why I love buying makeup…I just love to organize it. Yikes. 😀

Oh my gosh, my heart is literally bleeding! It hurts to see all these babies go. But I totally understand why you had to do this. I got rid of a lot of stuff too and only kept my high end products – just because I am not using drugstore products that often and it hurts to see dust on them. :/

It’s hard to part with MAC products but plus side save them and you can get the free lipstick or eye shadow!! We all need more lipstick!

You have inspired me to let things go, even though we have spent money on them.

You are really brave to part with so many pretty things, but I have learned that as pretty as they are, collecting makeup is not “possible”. It expires, and it breaks my heart to think that I might be wasting money I could use on something that lasts.
By the way, I’ve been watching you since 2009, I guess!
Thank you for sharing this with us!

I love this series you’ve been doing! Must feel so refeshing to clear everything out and keeping only your most loved/used products! Allows you to evaluate your collection too and know for the future what you don’t need c:
Once uni ends for this semester, I have to do a massive clean out of my make up too.
