Whistler: The Perfect Winter Escape (Even For Non-Skiers)

Coat: Everlane / Boots: Sorel / Photo by Alanna at Flytographer

For years, I’ve heard people rave about Whistler, BC for the Whistler Blackcomb Resort - it’s one of the largest ski resorts in North America and I always assumed that the destination didn’t offer much else. However, after sitting in rainy Seattle and craving a real winter getaway (snow!), I decided to look into Whistler and it turns out, there is SO much to do there besides ski. I packed up my car and hit the road for my first solo adventure of the year.

Where I Stayed: Airbnb Condo in Whistler Village
Whistler Village is full of Airbnbs and I couldn’t have been happier with the location. The village is full of shops and restaurants, and features an incredibly beautiful light display at night. I was just steps from all of the action, including the gondola to ride up the mountain.

Good Eats: Crêpe Montagne (I went TWICE), Peaked Pies, Mount Currie Coffee Co.

Things To Do: Whistler isn’t just for skiers! Here are 5 amazing winter activities in Whistler that don’t involve hitting the slopes.

1. Fly Through The Trees on a Winter Zipline Tour with Ziptrek
Imagine flying down a mountain over snowy trees with a birds-eye view of a winter wonderland - that’s what you get with winter ziplining! I signed up for the Eagle Tour with Ziptrek and had the best time. The tour is about 3 hours and involves a gondola ride up Whistler Mountain and five different ziplines on the way down. Bring your GoPro or rent one from Ziptrek for the afternoon!

2. Rejuvenate in Baths at Scandinave Spa
Whether you’re sore from winter sports or just want to relax, Scandinave Spa is a MUST. In addition to spa treatments, Scandinave offers an entire outdoor facility of hydrotherapy baths as well as solariums, outdoor fireplaces, and a heated yoga studio. There’s even a bistro for light meals and beverages.

3. Ride The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola For Incredible Views
There’s no easier way to get mountain views than with the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola! Hop on the main gondola from the base of either Whistler or Blackcomb, then catch the connecting gondola between peaks at the top. Make sure and get in line for a glass bottom car, and don’t forget to snap a picture standing on the Olympic podium at the top of Whistler mountain!

4. Bobsled Down The Olympic Track With A Trained Pilot
Whistler is home to the fastest bobsleigh track in the world, built for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. With Whistler Public Bobsleigh, you can bobsled down a portion of the track with a professional driver and experience 4g forces at 125km/hr, no training needed!

5. Strap on Snowshoes for Nature Sightseeing
There are endless trails for snowshoeing around Whistler, from lake loops to mountain ventures. Rent a pair of snowshoes for the day and explore on your own, or hop on a tour for a guided experience.

I had the best time in Whistler - next time I go I’ll have to bring my skis and give the mountain a try. If you’re visiting and want some great photos in the area, check out Alanna at Flytographer. What is your favorite place for a winter getaway?
